Amira Medunjanin
She was born in Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina, on April 23rd 1972. From the beginning of her career, she has been looking for appropriate approach to interpretation and presentation of traditional music of the South-East Europe, aiming to focus on that part of our art from the perspective of a modern world surrounding us. Her admiration to the beauty of the region’s oral tradition made her devote herself to creating a specific artful expression, which does not belong to music trends, or compromises, in order to fit in the current music schemes. Through her work with professional music bands, and many concerts, she has successfully represented this region’s culture, namely traditional Balkan music, at the World Music scene. Her excellent command of the English language eased the presentation of a unique concept of projects in the Western Europe and elsewhere. Music journalist Garth Cartwright called her “Bosnian Billie Holiday”, thus comparing the way that Amira plays with “sevdah”, finding new context and form in a years-old tradition. She was awarded with a prestigious award “La plue belle voix feminine 2012” (The best female vocal in 2012) by the Orange Foundation (France, Marseille, Babel Med Music festival). She was a guest vocalist at Bal-Kan album: Honey and Blood, by the famous Catalonian artist Jordi Savall, with whom she actively cooperates and performs around the world. After making a guest appearance at “A Secret Gate” album by Mostar Sevdah Reunion, Amira Medunjanin recorded her debut album “Rosa” for “Snail Records”, in 2005. The album received rave reviews in Great Britain and around Europe, appearing among the nominees and winners of “the album of the year” selections. The album was proclaimed album of the year by music critic (Clive Davis, The Sunday Times) in Great Britain. Above all, the album contributed a lot to promotion of regional countries in the Western Europe, and their music tradition worldwide. Furthermore, publishing the album in the Western Europe, made an easier approach to the world music scene for other musicians from this region. The aim was fully reached, with focus on promotion of a unique artful expression for South-East European countries. In April 2009, Amira published an album “Live” for “Gramofon”. The album contains recordings from her concert held at the Bosnian Cultural Centre within Jazz Fest Sarajevo in 2008. The same year, she made another step forward, by publishing already recorded studio album “Zumra”, prepared in collaboration with internationally acclaimed accordion player Merima Ključo. The album represents innovative approach to the regional music tradition, connecting applied accordion with arrangements of traditional melodies, verses and vocal performance style. The album was recorded in CMP studio, the sound being recorded by Walter Quintus, which gave it a unique touch. The album “Zumra” received Bosnia-Herzegovina’s music award “Indexi”. The famous publishing house “Harmonia Mundi” published it for the entire world. The album “Amulette”, also published by the same publishing house “Harmonia Mundi”, was done in collaboration with the following artists: Bojan Zulfikarpašić, Bachar Khalife, Nenad Vasilić, Kim Burton, Walter Quintus and Vlatko Stefanovski. The album “Amulette”, realized in 2010 / 2011, received rave reviews in distinguished magazines around the world, such as The Guardian, Daily Telegraph, Financial Times, The Sunday Times, Observer, etc. It was proclaimed Top of the World music publication internationally, by the distinguished British magazine “Songlines”. The latest album, “Silk and Stone”, published by “Aquarius Record” for the region, was recorded in a studio of a small concert hall “Vatroslav Lisinski”, and published in May 2014. It was the result of collaboration with Bojan Zulfikarpašić, who is at the same time the album’s producer, and also Boško Jović, Nenad Vasilić, extraordinary Turkish instrumentalists, Hakan Gungor - kanun and Yurdal Osman Tokcan - oud.
